What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium screws that Dr. Dekano places into your jaw during an outpatient procedure. They provide a durable, supportive foundation for oral restorations like bridges, crowns, or implant-supported dentures.

Once placed, dental implants integrate with your bone. That allows them to function like your natural teeth, ensuring they don’t change position.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Compared to traditional restorations, dental implants provide various advantages, including:

• Improved comfort

• Easier eating

• Durability

• Convenience

• Improved appearance

Dental implants also improve your oral health. If you’re missing teeth, you’re more likely to experience gum recession and bone loss. Implants reduce the risk of both these complications.

Are dental implants right for me?

Before recommending dental implants, Dr. Dekano reviews your dental health history and conducts a comprehensive oral exam. To receive implants, you need healthy gums and enough jaw to support them. If you have poor bone volume or any type of gum disease, Dr. Dekano might recommend a bone graft or periodontal treatment before placing them.

During your consultation, let Dr. Dekano know if you’re living with a chronic condition like high blood pressure or kidney disease. These and other issues may increase the risk of complications, including implant failure.

What does getting dental implants involve?

Getting dental implants takes at least three appointments spread out over the course of 6-12 months.

If Dr. Dekano determines that you’re a good candidate for implants, she administers a local anesthetic and places a number of posts into your jaw during a quick procedure. Following treatment, you return home for several months, allowing your mouth to heal.

Once the implants fuse with your jaw, you return to the practice. Dr. Dekano takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental laboratory. The laboratory then uses your impressions to craft implant-supported dentures, a bridge, or crowns.

When your restorations are ready, you visit the office for the final time. Dr. Dekano connects your crowns, bridge, or implant-supported dentures to the metal posts, restoring your smile, as well as your biting and chewing abilities.

How do I care for dental implants?

You care for dental implants like you would natural teeth. Dr. Dekano recommends flossing regularly, brushing twice a day, and visiting the practice every six months for a professional cleaning and oral exam. To prevent damage like chips and cracks, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, opening objects with your teeth, or chewing on ice.
